In Memory of Dr. Ed Zganjar
Ed Zganjar earned his Ph.D. degree in nuclear physics from Vanderbilt University in 1966 under the direction of Professor Joseph Hamilton. He joined the faculty of LSU that same year as Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1970 and full Professor in 1975, and subsequently named Alumni Professor. Prof. Zganjar's research interests were in nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics. His research had an important role in changing our understanding about the shapes of atomic nuclei. He played a leading role in the development of the first university facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, often elected chair of its Executive Committee. His research was continually funded by the U.S. Department of Energy for over 50 years. He was named a Fellow in the American Physical Society (APS) and received the Francis G. Slack Award for outstanding service from the Southeastern Section of the APS. He chaired the Department of Physics and Astronomy from 1982 to 1985 and was Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Development from 1991 to 1994. Prof. Zganjar loved teaching, and he had a great impact on many students and young scientists throughout his career. He was inducted into the LSU College of Science Hall of Distinction in 2015. He is greatly missed by his many friends and colleagues who enjoyed his outgoing nature, his warm friendship, his humility, and his love of life.
