In Memory of Dr. Bruce Jenny
Dr. Bruce Frederick Jenny, of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, died February 12, 2022, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He died unexpectedly, but peacefully, at the age of 75.
Bruce was born March 13, 1946, in Pompton Plains, New Jersey. He graduated from Pompton Lakes High School in 1964 and began his college education at Delaware Valley University in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. During his high school and undergraduate summers, he would retreat to his grandparent’s farm in Oldwick, New Jersey. Additionally, he worked part time at a nearby dairy farm that would prove to develop his love for animals and become a driving force in his academic studies. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Dairy Husbandry in 1968. Upon completion of his undergraduate studies, he further pursued his interests and love of animal studies at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. He earned a Master of Science degree (1971) and Doctorate in Philosophy (1974). During his time at Virginia Tech, Bruce found his professional passion as a research scientist and collegiate professor.
Bruce loved mentoring, teaching, and advising students in the field of Animal Science. He spent 43 years in higher education. During this time, he contributed to the research field with more than 20 publications. He served at Clemson University for 18 years as a researcher and associate professor. He served another 25 years at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA as a tenured professor, researcher, and Dairy Science department head. He was active in several professional organizations, including the American Dairy Science Association, the Southern Dairyman’s Association, and the LSU Dairy Science Club. He was awarded the Dr. D. L Evans Professorship in 2008, and the LSU College of Agriculture Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award in 2010. He was always available to volunteer his time to help work with students and peers, even after his retirement from LSU in 2017.
Outside of work, he loved spending time traveling with his wife of 53 years, Kathy to New York, England, the Dominican Republic, Italy, Prague and countless cruises in addition to many other places. They also enjoyed traveling with their children and grandchildren to Seacrest Beach, Disney World, and Cape Cod. They were active members at St. Jean Vinanny Catholic Church in Baton Rouge from 1991 to 2019. Bruce truly enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. They know he loved them very much.
Bruce is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Kathy) M. Jenny; his children Brian Jenny, Karen Jenny, and Steven Jenny; his daughters-in-law, Tracy Jenny and Megan Jenny; his granddaughters, Morgan Jenny, McKenzie Jenny, Harper Jenny, Elliott Jenny; grandson Wyatt Jenny; his sister, Pamela Winter; his brother-in-law, Dennis Winter; his sister-in-law, Mary Gillespie; and his nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. Bruce was preceded in death by his father, Fred Otto Jenny and his mother Helen Ziegler Jenny, both of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey.
He will be remembered by his family as a loving, supportive father and grandfather and by the academic community as one of the kindest and most supportive educators of his time.
